Dr Janes trained in Orthopaedic surgery in the United Kingdom and in Perth. He achieved his Orthopaedic Fellowship in 1994. He then completed a fellowship in upper limb surgery with Dr Hales and Honey in upper limb surgery.

Dr Janes was a Senior Lecturer with the University of Western Australia in Orthopaedic Surgery for 4 years and Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon to Royal Perth Hospital for 8 years.

Dr Janes has been the WA representative to the Board of the Australian Orthopaedic Association and is the current Chair for the WA branch. He was a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery for 10 years.
