Pay rise for WA health practitioners on the way

Doctors working in the state’s public health system are set for a pay bump this week.

An additional 3.75% pay rise promised as part of a pay deal for WA Health staff made last year is expected to be paid in upcoming pay cycles. 

The second of three agreed upon increases is part of a three-year pay deal for staff under the WA Health System – Medical Practitioners – AMA Industrial Agreement 2024.

Last year WA doctors received a 4.75% pay rise, and an additional 3% pay rise is expected in September 2026. 

When first announced, the AMA (WA) said the agreement recognised that medical pay in the public sector had been stagnant for a number of years.  

AMA (WA) former President Dr Michael Page said part of the pay rise was about attraction and retention – particularly as the state continued to rely on overseas-trained doctors to fill shortages.

Other allowances to boost recruitment and retention were also agreed as part of the pay deal, including a $4000 support payment for doctors in training to assist with training expenses and a commitment to review on-call and recall payments within the next two years. 

It also made moves to address GP shortages with a promise to modernise the GP classification structure to recognise more practitioners as specialists. 

WA Health confirmed the implementation of the 3.75% salary and allowance rise, effective from 3 September 2025. The following dates are when the pay will be provided:

Heath Support Services implementation: 8 September 2025 

Backpay period: 3-7 September 2025 

Backpay paid for those on MyHR pay slips: 25 September 2025 

Backpay paid for those on Lattice pay slips: 9 October 2025
